Visee Aneurysm Coil Helps Indonesian Patient Overcome a “Time Bomb” in Brain2024-01-09

2024.1.9

On December 18, 2023, Indonesia witnessed a medical milestone at its largest hospital in Bali, the RSUP Prof. Dr. I.G.N.G NGOERAH General Hospital. Here, a complex interventional surgery was successfully performed using the Visee Aneurysm Coil, a cutting-edge product from WEGO Intervention Group. This significant operation, aimed at treating a carotid-cavernous fistula (CCF) through an ophthalmic vein approach, marked the Visee Coil's first use in the Indonesian healthcare sector.

A 32-year-old patient, who had been suffering from a progressively enlarging eye lump for five years – possibly related to an old injury – came in with severe symptoms like eye bulging, redness, headaches, and nausea. Diagnosed with a Type A CCF, as per the Barrow classification, he sought the expertise of the RSUP Prof. Dr. I.G.N.G NGOERAH General Hospital.

CCFs, often resulting from traumatic arterial ruptures in the cavernous sinus, are akin to 'time bombs' in the brain, posing significant surgical challenges. However, interventional procedures have recently emerged as the preferred treatment method for such conditions.

The operation was led by Dr. Affan Priyambodo, the hospital's Chief Medical Officer and a neurosurgery expert. This groundbreaking surgery entailed direct access to the ophthalmic vein, which carries inherent risks like orbital complications and, in rare instances, permanent blindness. The team's thorough planning led to the selection of the Visee Coil for effectively neutralizing the CCF.

In the operating room, Dr. Priyambodo skillfully placed the coils, starting with a strategically positioned initial coil that established a firm base for a tightly woven occlusive 'basket'. Each subsequent coil added to this complex structure, eventually resulting in the successful closure of the fistula.

Following the surgery, the patient's recovery is being carefully monitored in the ICU, with significant improvements in his eye condition expected. Dr. Priyambodo, satisfied with the Visee Coil's performance in this challenging case, looks forward to its increased clinical application and plans to advocate for its wider use at the upcoming Indonesian Neurointerventional Conference.
